Best apps for common phobias (2026): which app covers spiders, heights, flying, needles, dogs and enclosed spaces

A grid of small grey circles in rows and columns, with blue dots filling one column from top to bottom

The best app for a phobia depends on which phobia it is, because most phobia apps only cover one or two. For the common ones in October 2026: spiders, heights and flying each have a dedicated iPhone app (ZeroPhobia, Gradual and SkyGuru among them), oVRcome covers the widest spread in virtual reality, and for needles, dogs and enclosed spaces we found no app on the UK App Store built for that fear alone. Below is which app covers which phobia, what it costs in the UK and when it was last updated.

    What we found

Two things, both checkable on the store.

The coverage is lopsided. Spiders, heights and flying have several apps each. Needles, dogs and enclosed spaces are not rare: Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust says needle phobia affects at least 1 in 10 people, and the NHS names dogs and "being in a small space" in its short list of examples. Yet we could not find a UK App Store app made only for any of the three. Your options there are a multi-phobia app or a general ladder app.

Many of the specialist apps are old. Half of the six single-phobia apps below have not been updated since May 2024: ZeroPhobia Fear of Flying (May 2021), EASYHEiGHTS (February 2022) and ZeroPhobia Fear of Heights (May 2024). GritLife, the only app we found selling a dogs programme, was last updated in January 2023. The spider app many articles still recommend, Phobys from the University of Basel, we could not find on the UK App Store at all on 25 October 2026.

    1. oVRcome (oVRcome Ltd). The widest coverage of common phobias in one app, and actively maintained. It delivers practice as filmed 360 degree scenes on your phone. A 2021 review by Healthify, a New Zealand health information site, lists seven programmes: "fear of needles, flying, heights, public speaking, dogs, spiders and social anxiety". Its own site now runs free online self-tests for 14 fears, including claustrophobia, birds, insects, mice and rats, driving and deep water, but a self-test is not a programme, and we could not confirm the current in-app list without subscribing. Its FAQ says you need a headset once you reach the VR part, after about two hours of audio lessons. At £174.99 a year it is the most expensive app here. It is the only app on this list that covers needles.

    2. Conquer Fear. Our app, so read this with that in mind. It is not tied to a list of phobias. You name a goal and the fear in the way, and it writes a ladder of small real-world steps for that exact fear, so it covers dogs, lifts or deep water as readily as spiders. It shows one step at a time and asks for a 0 to 10 fear rating before and after each attempt, and logs each one as completed, partial or not completed. You can tap "Make it smaller" on any step that feels too big. There is a help chat for when you are stuck. The free tier is one ladder, its first three steps, 20 logged attempts and three help chats. Premium is £9.99 a month or £49.99 a year, with a 7 day free trial on the annual plan, and Premium + Coaching adds accountability calls with a real person for £49.99 a month at the founding price (standard £149.99). It is on the App Store for iPhone only and needs a connection. Where it loses: it has no VR, no pictures or video of the thing you fear, and no audio. The steps happen in the real world, so for flying you need to be near an airport sooner or later. Here is a written example for a fear of flying ladder.

    3. MindShift CBT (247 Labs Inc). Free, no in-app purchases, on Android, and rebuilt in August 2026. For the common phobias on this page its library of ready-made steps is most likely to include yours, which is the case where it works best. It also has thought records, relaxation audio and a community. If price or Android is your constraint, start here.

    4. ZeroPhobia (Jean-Louis van Gelder, developed at VU Amsterdam). Three separate apps. Fear of Spiders uses augmented reality with ten levels and costs £9.99; it was updated in November 2025. Fear of Heights uses VR with a cardboard-style viewer; it is free to download with a £9.99 Pro licence and was last updated in May 2024. Fear of Flying is VR, £9.99, last updated in May 2021. All three are on Android. A one-off price instead of a subscription is the main appeal.

    5. SkyGuru (SkyGuru Inc). Flying only, and mostly for the day of the flight: a turbulence forecast for your route, real-time explanations of what the plane is doing, and exercises for panic in your seat. It works in airplane mode once a flight is set up. Free to download, with in-app purchases from £3.99 ("On the Ground") to £69.99 (a year with the video course). Well maintained. It is help during a flight, not a ladder towards one.

    6. Gradual: Fear of Heights (listed developer 娟 付). The newest heights app and the only single-phobia app here built around real-world steps rather than VR. You pick a goal such as crossing a footbridge or riding a glass lift, it turns that into practice steps, and you record how tense you feel before and after, with an Apple Watch companion. No account, no ads, data stays on your devices. Its listing has an unusually clear safety section: practise only in "maintained, level places with full barriers or enclosed glass". £5.99, released July 2026. Not tested hands-on.

    7. Bia (MyTherapy LLC). A paid guided programme. Fear of flying is one of its dedicated programmes; other phobias get custom-built ones. It tracks safety behaviours and can link to a professional you work with. At £29.99 a month or £149.99 a year it makes sense only if you want a full programme. On Android. Not tested hands-on.

    8. GritLife (GritLife Pty Ltd). The only app we found that sells a fear of dogs programme on its own, at £9.99, alongside programmes for spiders, water, storms, the dark, snakes and vomiting. That fills a gap. It has not been updated since 5 January 2023. Not tested hands-on.

    9. EASYHEiGHTS (University of Basel, listed under Nan WANG). Free VR heights practice built from 360 degree drone images of real places. It needs wireless VR goggles, and the listing says it is for a mild fear and for people over 16. Last updated in February 2022.

    10. Exposure: Face Your Fears (Inquiry Health LLC). Enter any fear and write your own hierarchy. Free and simple, last updated in November 2017.

    Phobia by phobia

Spiders. If you want to see a spider before you meet one, ZeroPhobia's augmented reality app is the maintained option at £9.99. For real-world steps, use a ladder app and start with pictures and videos, which you can find without any app. The NHS also suggests checking whether zoos run sessions for people with phobias.

Heights. The best served of the lot. Gradual for real-world steps, ZeroPhobia or EASYHEiGHTS for VR at home, oVRcome if you want heights alongside other fears.

Flying. SkyGuru for the flight itself. oVRcome, ZeroPhobia or Bia for practice beforehand. A ladder app for the steps on the ground, such as booking, getting to the airport and sitting in the terminal. Our flying apps comparison goes into those in more detail.

Needles. oVRcome is the only app we found with a needles programme. If you have ever fainted or nearly fainted at a needle or at blood, speak to your GP or the nurse before you practise on your own. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust explains that in some people heart rate and blood pressure rise and then "rapidly drop", which is why fainting is part of this fear and not most others. Conquer Fear teaches no physical technique for that, and nor do the other ladder apps here.

Dogs. GritLife or oVRcome for a packaged programme, or a ladder app. Real-world steps for dogs depend on finding a calm, known dog and an owner who will help, which no app can do for you.

Enclosed spaces. No dedicated app. A ladder app with real-world steps (a lift for one floor, a small room with the door open, then closed) is the most practical route.

Where we are not the answer

If you want to see your fear on a screen before you face it, VR and augmented reality apps do something we cannot, and for spiders, heights and flying they are good. If you want to pay nothing, MindShift CBT covers common phobias well and is on Android, which we are not. For the day you actually fly, SkyGuru is built for that moment and we are not. Our case is that we cover the fear the others skip, whether that is a dog, a lift or deep water, with steps written for your version of it.

    How we checked

Prices, developers, platforms and update dates were read from each app's UK App Store listing on 25 October 2026, and Android availability from Google Play the same day. "None found" means we searched the UK App Store and the web on 25 October 2026 and found no app made only for that fear. We may have missed one, and if you know it, tell us. We did not test Gradual, Bia or GritLife hands-on. oVRcome's programme list comes from a 2021 review, because the app's own site and FAQ did not list them. We build Conquer Fear, so read this as interested rather than neutral.
