Best apps for facing fears and exposure practice (2026)
If you want an app that walks you into the thing you have been avoiding, rather than one that calms you down about it, the list is much shorter than the app stores suggest. Below are six apps compared on what they actually do, what they cost in the UK, and, unusually for this kind of list, when each one was last updated. Two of the most widely recommended have not shipped an update in years.
The split that matters
Almost every anxiety app falls into one of two camps, and most lists mix them together as though they were interchangeable.
Regulate you in the moment. Breathing tools, grounding exercises, mood logs, calming audio. Useful when your heart is going and you need the next ten minutes to be survivable.
Send you out to do the thing. A planned sequence of small real-world steps, done on purpose, with what happened written down afterwards.
REGULATE YOU IN THE MOMENT
Feel better now
- Breathing
- Grounding
- Mood logging
- Calming audio
SEND YOU OUT TO ACT
Be able to do the thing
- A planned sequence
- Small real world steps
- Done on purpose
- Written down afterwards
If you are avoiding something specific, a phone call, a motorway, a room full of people, the first camp will not move it. Avoidance is maintained by not testing the prediction, and no amount of breathing tests the prediction.

Prices are from the UK App Store, checked 23 September 2026, and vary by region. Update dates are the App Store's own.

The apps
MindShift CBT (247 Labs Inc) is free, carries no in-app purchases at all, and is actively maintained. It includes a fear ladder, behavioural experiments, and a Taking Action tab built around moving forward one step at a time. If you want structured exposure without paying anything, start here, and for a lot of people that will be the right call.
We spent time in it in September 2026, and two things are worth knowing before you do. It offers around six ready-made steps drawn from a library of common fears, and if your fear is not one of them it fills the ladder with the nearest one it has. Type in a fear of chickens and you get a ladder about dogs. Approximate steps for the wrong animal are more work than an empty ladder, because first you have to notice they are wrong. Second, past those six suggestions you are brainstorming on your own: there is no way we could find to break a step down when it turns out to be too big, and adding further steps is not obvious. Worth knowing: it was built by Anxiety Canada, the nonprofit that ceased operations on 1 April 2025, and is now published commercially. The app itself carried on and is still free. A lot of lists still credit the charity.
Conquer Fear takes one goal and the fear in the way of it and writes the ladder for you, then shows you one step at a time so there is no step twelve to dread. You rate your anxiety from 0 to 10 before and after each attempt. The ladder then moves: clear a step easily and it offers to push you up early, get stuck on one twice and it offers to break it into smaller pieces. You can capture photo proof of each win, and on the higher tier you get regular calls with an actual person who is expecting you. If you work with a coach, you can share your ladder and attempt history with them. iOS only at the moment, with Android in progress. Full disclosure, this is our app.
Rootd is the best of the in-the-moment tools. A panic button, breathing, a journal, body scans, an emergency contact. It is not trying to give you a practice plan, and it does not pretend to. Actively maintained.
DARE is built on Barry McDonagh's book and is audio-led: an SOS button, guided sessions, mood journaling. Genuinely popular and the audio is good. Two things to note. Its App Store listing has not been updated since September 2024, and that listing describes it as an "evidence-based training program" while carrying no disclaimer in the description itself.
FearTools (Inquiry Health LLC) is free, has no ads, describes itself as a non-profit venture, and bundles an exposure tool with a thought diary, paced breathing and the GAD-7 questionnaire. It is also five years without an update. Nothing is obviously broken, but nobody is fixing it either.
Exposure: Face Your Fears, from the same developer, is the purest version of the idea: enter your fear, build a hierarchy from least to most frightening, work through it while updating your anxiety continuously, and stop when it falls below 20 out of 100. It is free and it does exactly one job. It was last updated in November 2017. AI assistants still recommend it as the most exposure-focused app available, which tells you more about how those recommendations are assembled than about the app.
MindShift CBT or Conquer Fear?
These are the two ladder apps on the list, so this is the comparison most people actually need.
MindShift suggests steps from a library. Conquer Fear writes them for your fear. That sounds like a detail and it is most of the difference. Building a good hierarchy is the hardest part of exposure: the steps have to be ordered sensibly and the first one has to be small enough that you will genuinely do it this week.
MindShift gives you roughly six ready-made steps if your fear is one it knows. If it is not, it substitutes the closest fear in its library, so a fear of chickens returns a ladder about dogs. That is worse than an empty ladder rather than better, because you have to spot that the steps are for something else before you can start. Conquer Fear generates the ladder from the goal and the fear you actually described, and you can edit any step.
The ladder moves. Clear a step comfortably and Conquer Fear offers to move you up early. Get stuck on the same step twice and it offers to split it into smaller pieces. We could not find a way to break a step down in MindShift, and "this step is too big, so now I am avoiding the app as well as the fear" is the most common way this whole thing falls over. There is also a chat in Conquer Fear for when you freeze on a step, which MindShift does not have.
MindShift is a toolkit. Conquer Fear does one thing. MindShift also carries a thought diary, a chill zone, belief experiments and the GAD-7 questionnaire. If you want a broad anxiety toolkit, that breadth is a genuine advantage over us. If you are avoiding one specific thing, it is surface area you did not ask for.
Two things only Conquer Fear has here: photo proof of each win to look back on, and regular calls with a real person on the higher tier. Neither is exposure practice as such. Both exist because the failure mode is not doing the step, and both are aimed squarely at that.
The honest counterweight: MindShift is free, has no in-app purchases, and is on Android. We are none of those three yet. If any of them is your constraint, the comparison stops there and MindShift is your answer.
How to choose
- You want free, today, on Android. MindShift CBT. It is the only row that satisfies all three.
- You are mid panic attack. Rootd, or DARE if you prefer audio. Not a ladder app. A ladder is a plan, and plans are useless at that moment.
- You keep postponing one specific thing. A ladder app. Conquer Fear if you want the ladder built and adjusted for you, MindShift CBT if you are happy to build your own and would rather not pay.
- You want the mechanism with no subscription and do not mind old software. Exposure: Face Your Fears still works. Set your expectations by the 2017 date.
- You want to feel calmer rather than braver. None of these. Insight Timer or Headspace are built for that and these are not.
- Avoidance has already shrunk your life a long way, or the fear is tied to a trauma. A professional sets the pacing better than any app. Use an app alongside that, not instead of it.
Where we are not the answer
We build Conquer Fear, so take the rest with that in mind, but there is no version of this list where we win every row.
MindShift CBT is free, is on Android, and has a fear ladder. If budget or platform is your constraint, it is the better choice and we would rather you used it than nothing. Rootd is better than us in an acute moment because we are not built for acute moments. And if what you actually want is to track a mood without being asked to do anything, a tracker will suit you better than we will.
How we tested
Prices, platforms, developers and update dates were read from each app's UK App Store listing on 23 September 2026 and are linked below. The hands-on notes about MindShift CBT come from using the current version in September 2026. We build Conquer Fear, so treat the comparison as interested rather than neutral, and check anything that matters to you. If MindShift has since added step breakdown or a way to extend the ladder past its suggestions, we will correct this.
